The goddess of chance Tyche was depicted not only with a cornucopia and a ship's rudder, but also wearing a crown in the form of city walls. Popular in the Hellenistic age, the goddess was regarded as the patroness of cities. Female statues with a fortress tower on the head have been found in many cities, not only in Greece but also in London and Milan. The bronze Tyche in this photograph was found in 1675 near the church of Saint-Eustache in Paris, and is therefore considered the patroness of Lutetia, the ancient settlement on the site of the French capital. In the eye sockets of the Tyche of Lutetia the glass pupils have survived
