God Is Light

Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, a painting by Arkhip Kuindzhi.

This is the most enigmatic of Kuindzhi's works, which he showed, together with a few others, after 20 years of silence. And those who saw it were his 4 pupils. The second time, Kuindzhi showed the picture to Dmitry Mendeleev and his wife, and to the writer Hieronymus Yasinsky, who, under its impression, wrote:

«...we saw a dark, thickly leaved garden of cedar and olive trees on the Mount of Olives, with a bright, dark-blue clearing in the middle, across which the Saviour of the world was walking, bathed in dark moonlight. This is not a moonlight effect, this is moonlight in all its unutterable power, golden-silver, soft, merging with the green of the trees and grass and pervading the white fabric of the garments.
