"But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence"
But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. The Apostle Paul, First Epistle to Timothy, 2:12
Pope Leo XIV has appointed the former superior general of the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor as secretary of one of the Vatican dicasteries. She is the second woman in the leadership of the Vatican dicasteries, and will serve directly under the first, whom Pope Francis appointed prefect of a dicastery in January 2025.
It is curious that Pope Leo XIII, to whose spiritual legacy Prevost appealed in choosing his name, defended in his writings the traditional gender roles in the structure of the Church and the hierarchical nature of ecclesiastical authority, reserved for men.
But as early as 2022 Pope Francis reformed the Roman Curia, laying down in the new apostolic constitution Praedicate evangelium that any baptised person may head a Vatican dicastery, which made it possible for baptised laymen and laywomen to hold leading posts in the Roman Curia.
