The dispute began in 1926, when a treaty on the division of property after the fall of the monarchy in 1918 was signed between representatives of the House and the former state of Prussia. However, since the Hohenzollern property had been confiscated before the agreement was concluded, the legal questions remained unresolved for almost 100 years.
Georg Friedrich, Prince of Prussia and great-great-grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm II, had been seeking the return of artefacts and financial compensation since 2014. After the lawsuits were withdrawn in 2023, negotiations resumed last autumn.
Under the agreement reached, the collection, which includes, among other things, a portrait by Lucas Cranach the Elder, will remain in the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and the German Historical Museum. The details of the agreement are not being disclosed
