In Vietnam, Fabrication of Research Data and Plagiarism Are to Be Punished with a Lifetime Ban from Science

On 25 May the Ministry of Science and Technology announced the penalties awaiting dishonest scholars: the return of grants, a public apology, and an entry recording the violation on the national digital platform.

In 2020 it emerged that Vietnam's Ton Duc Thang and Duy Tan universities had been paying foreign authors to list the institution as their affiliation and thus haul it up the rankings. In 2022 an inspection showed that about 70% of the publications credited to Ton Duc Thang had been produced by outsiders.

Incidentally, Vietnam was also a steady fixture in the top ten buyers of authorship from the Russian paper mill exposed by Anna Abalkina.
