At the AZ/ART Contemporary Art Centre on Maroseyka, a Joint Exhibition of the AZ Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery

At the AZ/ART Contemporary Art Centre at Maroseyka, 11/4c1, a joint exhibition of the AZ Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery is under way. Until 29 November it shows 43 sculptures of the late 1950s and the 1960s from the collections of the Tretyakov Gallery, the AZ Museum and the collection of Ekaterina Silis. The curator is Irina Sedova, head of the Department of Sculpture of the 18th to 21st Centuries at the Tretyakov Gallery.

The title is explained by the roster of participants. Side by side stand works by Ernst Neizvestny, Vadim Sidur, Nikolai Silis and Igor Shelkovsky, that is, authors associated with nonconformism, and works by Oleg Komov and Daniel Mitlyansky, who were recognised by the authorities. Komov was a People's Artist of the USSR and an academician; Mitlyansky received prizes and worked for the city's streets. Yet in Komov's sculpture “Glass” a girl washes a pane that is not there: it is indicated only by a steel frame, and the viewer has to complete it for himself.

Among the exhibits are Neizvestny's “Explosion” and “Cosmonaut”, Sidur's “Monument to Those Killed by Bombs”, Mitlyansky's “Self-Portrait with a Mask”, Komov's portrait of the artist Alexander Drevin, repressed in 1938, “Musicians”, “Motherhood” and “Girlfriends” by Tatyana Sokolova, “Adults and Children” by Nina Zhilinskaya, and Yury Alexandrov's wooden relief “Young Artists Show Their Paintings”.
