Naples had an excellent school of carving not only in stone, but also in bone
Naples had an excellent school of carving not only in stone, but also in bone. And if the famous sculpture in the Sansevero Chapel showed a man struggling free from the net of vice, then the treasury of the National Archaeological Museum of Spain holds, for example, a 40-centimetre ivory sculpture of 1700 depicting the apocryphal story of the expulsion of Lucifer and the rebel angels from paradise. A fragment of tusk is set in a gilded copper frame with touches of silver filigree. At the head of the heavenly host is the Archangel Michael. Above the proceedings sits the Holy Trinity, and it must be said that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit look rather serene. Beneath the scene of the angelic battle is a mini-episode: Adam and Eve being driven out with a broom.
