In the early 2000s Eduard Steinberg, a representative of the second wave of the Russian avant-garde, a nonconformist, one of those whose art turned away from the Soviet norm towards pure geometry and metaphysics, built a house in Tarusa, which he made his working studio, where he painted and where friends gathered. His youth had passed on the banks of the Oka, here he began as an artist, and here he returned every summer, dividing the year between Paris and the Kaluga region.

He called his language metageometry: crosses, circles, planes, behind which stands not design but a conversation about death, memory and the order of things. In Europe he was known and valued, while at home recognition came later.

After the artist's death in 2012, his widow Galina Manevich gave the house and part of his works to the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. Since 2016 the studio has been part of the museum, and since 2017 it has been open for tours. Everything in the house has been preserved as it was under Steinberg: the furnishings, the decor, the household objects, the working space. And since 2024 the house has been restored to its original purpose, and art is once again being made here. Edik Steinberg's two-storey house has become a residency. An artist lives in Tarusa for two months, works with Steinberg's legacy and creates his or her own project literally in his studio.

Eduard Steinberg's Studio is open in summer, from June to September. A good reason to make the journey to Tarusa and see how one of the great Russian nonconformists worked. More information is available on the official website
