An Old Story: He, She and Her Lover...

So, the year is 1872. A wealthy bachelor is pursuing a married woman with great persistence, and no refusals have the least effect on him. The spouses resolve to teach the ardent gentleman a lesson: he receives from her a perfumed letter inviting him to the house at a time when her husband will be away. Arriving at the appointed hour, the lover finds the lady of the house reclining on a sofa in the half-light of the drawing room. He flings himself upon her with passionate kisses, only to meet a pair of sturdy masculine arms and a thick moustache! It is the husband, dressed up in a lady's gown. Lanterns are lit in the room, and in walks the wife with a riding whip. The hapless suitor is thrashed with all their might, until the husband tires of holding him. Never again will the lonely vagabond of love return to the object of his adoration.

Though it seems to me that in reality things were not quite so clear-cut 😏😏😏
