Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s fresco on bad government in the Hall of Nine of Siena’s town hall
A fourteenth-century masterpiece, an allegory of bad government and its consequences by Ambrogio Lorenzetti: tyranny reigns with a bestial grin, justice is oppressed, cities are gripped by violence, people suffer, and chaos and destruction are everywhere. The fresco in the Sala dei Nove of the town hall of Siena is the work of the Italian painter Ambrogio Lorenzetti. To the left of the tyrant are the allegory of Cruelty with an infant and a snake, Treason with a lamb-scorpion, and Fraud with the wings of a bat. To the right of the tyrant are Fury in the form of a centaur-boar-lion, Discord and War. At the feet of the beast lies vanquished Justice in a shroud
