Specialists correct the tilt of the pedestals of late Empire style gates
Restorers in the Neskuchny Garden Rescue the Ceremonial Gates of the Alexandrinsky Palace - "Seasons"
With time, the pedestals for the statues had leaned badly towards one another and looked alarming.
The gates, created in the Late Empire style, are an architectural masterpiece of the mid-nineteenth century, and so as not to harm the structure, the specialists had to dig out the foundation of the northern pylon by hand. The lean of one has now been corrected, and the second will be straightened by the end of the month.
The sculptures themselves have been handed over to the workshops to be put in order. The palace railings are also being restored. One wonders how much the restoration will cost. All the work is being carried out with funds provided to the Russian Academy of Sciences as a grant from the capital's budget.
