Ernest Pignon-Ernest and his socially engaged street art in France since the 1960s

Works by the French artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest, a member, incidentally, of the French Académie des Beaux-Arts in the painting section. Pignon-Ernest is considered one of the founders of street art in France. Since the 1960s he has placed his works in the urban setting, among small architectural forms, ruins, fences and blank walls: works that are sharply social and resonant, that make one think, sympathise, and attend to problematic questions or tragic cases. For example, he created a series of images in memory of Pasolini for the 40th anniversary of his murder. He made a series of drawings in prison premises, paying tribute to the victims of political persecution around the world. His field of vision takes in the stories of ordinary people and events that shook the world, the tragedies of everyday life and the novellas of reality that no one has noticed
