Alexey Korzukhin's 1876 painting “Before Confession” in the Tver Gallery

Before Confession. Alexey Ivanovich Korzukhin, 1876, Tver Regional Picture Gallery.

Korzukhin was one of the celebrated group of 14 rebellious top pupils of the Academy of Arts who refused to take part in the Academy's competition for the Grand Gold Medal, which would have given them six years of study in Italy at the Academy's expense, along with a stipend and the right to teach art.

Korzukhin painted "Before Confession" when he was already a mature, established artist and an academician. There are two versions of this subject, the first in the Tver Gallery, the second in the Tretyakov Gallery.
