The production, created by the director Leonid Baratov together with the outstanding designer Fyodor Fyodorovsky and staged at the end of the 1940s, became legendary and remains a calling card of the Bolshoi, performed unchanged for as many as 75 years now.
It is called a museum on the stage, thanks to the realism of its sets, props and costumes, which correspond as closely as possible to their historical originals, both in materials and in workmanship.
