I Don't Care for Such Familiarity, but What Will the Pope Say?
On 18 September the Vatican declined several protocol proposals from the Élysée Palace, including the Legion of Honour and a visit to Notre-Dame. On 25 September Leo XIV publicly reprimanded Macron: war, euthanasia, the abandonment of the Church. Macron took offence and began boycotting Masses. But on 27 September, seeing the pontiff's colossal success in the country, Macron resolved to bask in the halo of his popularity and attend the final Mass, and then see the Pope off at the airport, which had not originally been planned.
But Emmanuel Jean-Michelovich, unaccustomed to observing protocol amid the endless embraces and smackers exchanged with presidents who are his sandpit chums, suddenly begins to hug the Pope improperly and to steer him by the elbow. What on earth is this called?
