London's Tate Modern has been the most visited museum of modern art since 2014, except in 2021, when the lead passed to the Centre Pompidou in Paris and to MoMA in New York
In recent years, however, the museum has faced falling attendance, especially among foreign visitors, who make up its core audience. In 2019–2020, for instance, there were more than 600,000 young people aged 16 to 24; in 2023–2024 there were only 357,000. The Art Newspaper writes that young people from EU countries have begun to travel less because of rising prices and the consequences of Brexit.
Visitors from sunny Pakistan are in no hurry to behold the masterpieces of Pablo Picasso, still less those of Rachel Whiteread, Carsten Höller, Doris Salcedo and Ai Weiwei
