Not exactly a treasure, one might say, but still a fairly rare mosaic of a longship and the Kremlin on an ordinary prefab block in Moscow at 22 Yablochkova Street. The building is being demolished under the renovation programme, while activists from among the residents of the Butyrsky district are trying to save a rare example of Soviet monumental decorative art, of which the city possibly has five to ten counterparts. What is to be done? The only option is to keep the two end panels with the mosaic, since the decorative elements were set directly into the concrete at the factory. By and large, these two panels could be used in some structure after the construction of a new building on a new site. The mosaic does indeed look unprepossessing, but it represents a peculiar strand in the history of decorating the city in the era of mass industrial construction, and surely an optimal way to preserve it can be found
