UNESCO Prepares to Expand the List of World Heritage in Danger
The vote will begin in Busan, South Korea, this Friday. The List of World Heritage in Danger is a separate status within the World Heritage register, to which are added sites threatened with destruction by war, natural disaster, development or neglect.
The Director of the World Heritage Centre, Lazare Eloundou Assomo, stresses that this is an instrument that opens access to funding and attention.
In the near future, under an accelerated procedure, three sites are due to be added, among them the archaeological site of Sebastia in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Sebastia is identified with biblical Samaria. Five castles in southern Lebanon, in the zone of Israeli strikes, including the Crusader fortress of Beaufort, occupied by Israeli forces in May, are also given priority
