AI Declares Caravaggio a Painting Long Thought to Be a Copy
There are three versions of the painting "The Lute Player". One is kept in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. The second belongs to the collection of the Wildenstein family, the well-known French art dealers. The third was until recently considered a copy. In 1969 specialists from Sotheby's and the Metropolitan Museum sold this work for a mere 860 euros, having pronounced it a copy.
Recently a Swiss artificial intelligence programme attributed the painting to Caravaggio. If the attribution is confirmed, the value of the work may run into millions.
Although experts treat the conclusions of artificial intelligence with caution, it is already clear that such programmes will be used ever more actively by the professional community
