I am simply horrified: under the guise of "restoration", the necropolis of the Novodevichy Convent has been literally destroyed. See for yourselves. Levelling hundreds of burials to the ground and dismantling monuments, gravestones and the remains of crypts is now what passes for restoring a cemetery. If any of you have visited Novodevichy, and I mean the territory of the convent itself, not the cemetery of the same name, you will remember how many old burials, and in quite decent condition, there were inside the convent walls. Now, at best, the monuments are heaped in a pile and covered with tarpaulin. Those responsible for this horror, moreover, say that all the gravestones will be returned to their places, adding: to within 10 metres. In practice, this means that the graves of most of the eminent people of the 18th and 19th centuries will simply be lost, and their monuments will be set out in random order. That is to say, the necropolis of the Novodevichy Convent as such no longer exists. For the first time in my life I see such a nightmare taking place in peacetime in the centre of the capital. Does anyone still have questions about what will come next?
