The artist's signature is not easily found on the painting; it is hidden in the decoration of the pot.

The canvas was bought in an antique shop in the 1950s as the work of an unknown artist, but the buyer, the art historian Felix Vishnevsky, discovered the concealed signature and established the authorship. It emerged that during the war years the painting, which had belonged to the Russian Museum, where it had come from the imperial collection of the Museum of Alexander III, had been lost in transit.

The painting was returned to the Russian Museum, which in the 2000s transferred it to the collection of the Tropinin Museum, founded by Felix Vishnevsky.
