Georges Rouget's painting of the wedding of Napoleon and Marie Louise at the Louvre on 1 April 1810

The Marriage of Napoleon and Marie Louise, by the artist Georges Rouget. The wedding of 1 April 1810 took place in the Louvre, where the architects Percier and Fontaine had rebuilt the Salon Carré as a chapel. The painting captures the moment when Cardinal Fesch blesses the couple; Napoleon and Marie hold hands, surrounded by princes and princesses and representatives of the court. The canvas depicts the style that Napoleon instilled in his court: court etiquette required ladies to be in full dress jewels at all times, to say nothing of so momentous a ceremony. Marie Louise and the ladies behind her wear diadems made by Nitot.
