The Museums Association proposes a new code of ethics

The Museums Association of Great Britain has proposed a new code of ethics. Museums are now advised to refuse sponsorship from organisations that damage the environment or violate human rights, and to seek funding from "ethical sources". Institutions are also urged to consider the climate and social consequences of all their decisions.

The previous code was adopted in 2015. Against the background of Britain's new climate policy and public pressure, a number of major institutions, among them Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Shakespeare Company, have already ended their cooperation with companies engaged in the extraction of fossil fuels. At the same time, the Science Museum in London and the British Museum continue to receive sponsorship from such organisations, insisting that they are obliged to ensure financial stability.
