On 10 September a sculpture by the American artist Chabalala Self, "Lady in Blue", appeared on the plinth in the north-west corner of Trafalgar Square in London
Contemporary art has been shown on the pedestal, built in the 19th century for an equestrian statue that was never installed, since 1998, and since 2005 the Mayor of London's office has chosen a new work for the plinth every two years. "Lady in Blue" is the sixteenth such work.
The bronze sculpture, about 2.7 metres high, depicts a young Black city woman striding confidently across the square in a bright blue dress and matching shoes, with jewellery imitating lapis lazuli.
The Deputy Mayor of London for Culture, Justine Simons, called the sculpture a tribute to ordinary women.
The sculpture will stand in the square for two years, and will then move to Fornebu in Norway, where it will be installed by a private foundation
