На Юге Казахстана сохранились стены древнего города Сауран, лежавшего на Шелковом пути и существовавшего как минимум с IX века. Сауран находится между Туркестаном и Кызылордой на территории заповедных земель Каратау. Люди оставили древний город в XIII-XIV веке и передвинулись на другое место, основав новый Сауран. Город пал от джунгар в начале XVIII века. Но еще до XIX века здесь оставались остатки городской жизни
