Sous la domination autrichienne et française, de nombreux canaux de Venise furent comblés afin de faciliter la circulation des piétons dans la ville. Il est aujourd'hui difficile d'imaginer à quel point cela a défiguré l'aspect de la cité. Mais désormais, ces canaux asséchés et recouverts font partie de son histoire
