L'horreur qui attendait l'Allemagne, Klaus Mann l'avait prédite dès « Mephisto », publié en 1936\. Il met dans la bouche de l'un des personnages principaux, l'étrange écrivain Théophile Marder, cet avertissement : « Le pire arrivera. Souvenez-vous de moi, mes enfants, quand ce jour viendra. Je l'ai prévu et prédit. J'ai senti la catastrophe qui approchait. Notre siècle est gâté. »
