L'église Saint-Louis-des-Français à Rome, entre le Panthéon et la piazza Navona, doit sa célébrité à trois chefs-d'œuvre du Caravage, peints en 1599-1602 pour orner la chapelle Contarelli. Les toiles représentent des scènes de la vie de saint Matthieu : la Vocation, l'Ange et le Martyre.
