Les icônes dites « à hypostases confondues » de la Sainte Trinité, représentant Jésus avec trois visages et quatre yeux, furent interdites par l'Église catholique comme par l'Église orthodoxe, bien qu'elles aient jadis possédé une vaste tradition iconographique. Le Saint-Synode proscrivit en 1722 la représentation de Dieu le Père, du Fils et du Saint-Esprit sous les traits d'un homme à trois visages figurant l'unité des hypostases divines, tandis que l'Église catholique l'avait fait dès le début du XVIIe siècle.
