Daphné avait fait vœu de chasteté et vivait très mal les assiduités de Phébus, épris d'elle ; il existait peut-être d'autres issues, mais la métamorphose en arbre s'avéra, elle aussi, un moyen fort efficace d'échapper à une liaison non désirée.
