A Japanese-Taiwanese research group has analysed a femur and a tibia from the bed of the Penghu Channel off Taiwan and determined that they belonged to Denisovans who lived about 45,000 years ago. But judging by the size of the bones, one of them is estimated to have stood 180 cm tall and weighed 83 kg, the other 190 cm and 91 kg. In other words, the Denisovans were veritable giants of their day. That is 15-20 cm taller than the Neanderthals, and, for example, 30-37 cm taller than the Homo erectus of Zhoukoudian.
