Jacques-Louis David, 1807\. Sketch for the portrait of Napoleon in his coronation robes. On Napoleon's head is the golden wreath made for his coronation on 2 December 1804 by the jeweller Martin-Guillaume Biennais. The laurel wreath points us to Napoleon's favourite style, the antique. It is curious that when the painter David met Bonaparte in 1797, he remembered him as "handsome as an ancient god". Such Napoleon would remain in many portraits from the brush of Jacques-Louis David: with the grandeur of a Caesar, in splendour no less than that of a Roman emperor
