The restoration of the Melnikov-Yemelyanova-Toplenin house on Mansurovsky Lane has been completed. This wooden residence on a nineteenth-century stone plinth is commonly called "the Master's house": rumour assigns the Master of *The Master and Margarita* a little basement flat in this very building.

Bulgakov visited the house in the late 1920s as a guest of the brothers Vladimir and Sergei Toplenin, who had settled there in 1917.

The building, as many will remember, was in a sorry state and had stood neglected for decades. It is in private ownership. In the end Mosgornasledie (the Moscow heritage authority) more or less compelled the owner to put the house in order at his own expense, the department itself merely supervising the restoration work.

I have not been inside; they write that everything there has been restored as well. From the outside it looks good. I am certain that it was precisely the legend of the literary Master living here in the cellar that became the house's protective charter; otherwise the spot would most likely have long been occupied by some developer's blunder.
