His Eminence Seraphim, Metropolitan of Kythira, has excommunicated the members of the Greek parliament who voted to legalise same-sex marriage and the adoption of children by same-sex couples in Greece. The ban on communion for these deputies is already in force in two Greek dioceses, the Metropolises of Piraeus and of Kythira.

In his message for the Lenten Triodion, Metropolitan Seraphim of Kythira remarked that the events in the Greek parliament "call forth rivers of tears of repentance and grief":

"Our age is truly worthy of tears and, without exaggeration, worthy of mourning... The God-loving people of God grieve and lament over the blasphemy committed in our days... 'Rights' reign, but without any talk of duties... The spirit of party politics has prevailed over the command of the Spirit of God."

Metropolitan Seraphim declared that the deputies who voted for same-sex marriage will not be admitted to communion, nor invited to the Church's official festive events, until their sincere repentance for what they have done has been demonstrated; the question of their excommunication will be further considered by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece.

Meanwhile, Patriarch Bartholomew in Constantinople remains silent.
