Can you name an artist who never painted flowers? As the exhibition Something about flowers at the Alina Pinsky Gallery has shown, even in František Kupka, if one is so inclined, a vase of flowers can be found. The exhibition, which is much to my liking, tells, as it were, the story of the bouquet in the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. It runs from the Renoir-and-Cézanne flowers of Nikolai Sinezubov and the superb little bouquet by André Lanskoy to the flat, almost Warholian flowers of Shelkovsky, and to canvases by artists so familiar to these halls as Lev Povzner, Igor Skaletsky and Yevgeny Muzalevsky (and photographs by Tim Parshchikov). Amid the summer fragrance, the story of the paintings of Fyodor Semyonov-Amursky sounds touching: a true collector's rarity. For their showing in Paris his pupil Igor Shelkovsky made the frames himself, in his own recognisable style, and paintings that already resemble Shelkovsky's ceramics embodied in oil turned out to be framed, into the bargain, by his sculptural work. It is a very pleasant exhibition with a handsome historical thread and beloved modernists, where one can learn a few new names, see fresh works by the masters and rediscover someone forgotten. Such was the case with Tereshkovich: a girl with flowers by him hung in my home for a long time, yet everyone who asked about it had, for some reason, never heard of such a Russian European, and Alina has brought precisely his bright, impressionistic basket of flowers.
