Civil war is breaking out in Italy. On one side stand the republicans, followers of Garibaldi; on the other, the supporters of the ruling Bourbon dynasty. Alain Delon plays Tancredi, nephew of the protagonist, Prince Salina, who embodies the aristocracy in the face of fatal change. Prince Salina is played by Burt Lancaster. The beauty Claudia Cardinale appears in supporting scenes.

The educated and progressive Prince Fabrizio di Salina accepts the changes taking place with difficulty, yet with full awareness, whereas his young nephew Tancredi joins the ranks of the Garibaldian rebels, and afterwards attaches himself to the army of the King of Savoy…

Luchino Visconti's historical picture, besides acquainting us with the spirit of the age, allows us to immerse ourselves in the psychology of human relationships and in profound questions of morality, not to mention the eternal theme of man's place in history.
