In a recently published press release, the administration stated that the museum will close unless the Dutch government allocates additional funds for renovation.

According to the statement, the authorities are "failing to keep the promise" made to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962\. After the artist's heirs handed hundreds of works over to the foundation, the state undertook to provide for the construction of the museum and its subsequent upkeep.

Today the museum receives around $10 million a year from the government, yet covering the costs of climate control, lifts and the building's infrastructure requires a further $2.9 million or so annually. The press release stresses the "poor condition" of the museum complex. To resolve the problems, the institution is launching the "Master Plan 2028", costing $120.6 million.

This perpetual cap-in-hand begging by wealthy institutions makes one think ever more about the hopelessly poor management of culture. On the inside, the managers cannot apportion their budgets or set priorities, while sitting on insane salaries and incurring colossal PR expenses. On the outside, the officials in charge of culture are either, for obvious reasons with a corrupt component, uninterested in spending the allocated money rationally, or simply do not know how. Why, then, do they occupy their posts?
