Anyone who dreams of a prince should watch the 1969 film "Anne of the Thousand Days", which won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. True, the picture contains a number of dubious historical allusions, such as the presence of Mary Tudor at her mother's deathbed, which was impossible given the royal ban on any contact between them, but on the whole the story of a mad sovereign who treacherously breaks the fates of his subjects and of his chosen women is told faithfully. And, frankly, if one learns in good time of the tragic lot of Henry VIII's many women, every wish to find one's own prince may quite reasonably dry up and cease to spoil one's life thereafter. As for the image of Anne Boleyn, mother of Elizabeth I, in Charles Jarrott's film, in England it is regarded as the definitive historical portrait of this strong and unfortunate lady, for which great credit belongs to Geneviève Bujold, who played the queen and turned 80 on 1 July
