# Vráble in south-western Slovakia, a Linear Pottery culture settlement of 5250-4940 BC, has become the site of a mysterious mass burial

Vráble in south-western Slovakia, a Linear Pottery culture settlement of 5250-4940 BC, has become the site of a mysterious mass burial. In a ditch at the entrance to one of the quarters lie dozens of skeletons without skulls, among them four pairs and a common grave holding at least 77 people. Only one child kept its head. The bones bear traces of cutting tools. And the most astonishing thing is that the decapitation was post-mortem. No lower jaws were found in the burial. The team of archaeologists from Kiel University believes that the heads were carried off whole and kept somewhere. The cervical vertebrae remained along the wall of the ditch. All this looks like intricate work upon the body, inscribed in some unknown ritual
