It is now fifty years since the bulldozers and water-sprinkler trucks rumbled away from the junction of Ostrovityanov and Profsoyuznaya Streets, but the memory of the USSR's chief exhibition of unofficial art, the so-called "Bulldozer Exhibition", lives on, and interest in Soviet nonconformism only grows with each passing year. The new exhibition project "Belyaevo — Izmailovo. Nonconformism from the Q-ART Collection" at Q-ART Gallery bears this out.

The project, devoted to the landmark events of the artistic underground in 1974, brings together works by representatives of the early wave of nonconformism: participants in the resounding Bulldozer Exhibition, and then in the Izmailovo and other exhibitions of unofficial art. It was the Bulldozer and Izmailovo exhibitions that gave the impetus to the active exhibiting of unofficial artists in the USSR.

The first series, "A Story of the Bulldozer", which opened at Q-ART Gallery on 19 September, is largely centred on the artists of the Lianozovo Group, who became some of the principal heroes of the Bulldozer Exhibition. The display includes Lidia Masterkova, Oscar Rabin, Vladimir Nemukhin, Sergey Bordachev, Yury Zharkikh and Rimma Zanevskaya. The remaining works are intended to immerse the viewer in the heterogeneous milieu of the unofficial art of the 1970s, and will create a kind of alternative version of how that same Bulldozer Exhibition might have looked had other masters of the Soviet underground joined it.

The second part of the project "Belyaevo — Izmailovo. Nonconformism from the Q-ART Collection", "Green Light for the Underground", opens on 30 October and will be devoted directly to the Izmailovo Exhibition.

In all, the project brings together more than forty works, many of which are being shown to the general public for the first time.
