A view of Republic Square in Almaty from the south. You cannot see it from here, but the square has an unusual octagonal shape, and at the base of the bowl stands the Independence Monument. The two tower blocks alongside are residential. The old photographs show the square from the north; the boulevard running down the middle is Baiseitova Street, today buried in greenery. The glass dome in the centre, however, is a skylight for an underground structure that appeared in the 2010s on the site of the demolished grandstands, where a multifunctional shopping and entertainment space was later installed. As you can see, in the few years of its existence the square has undergone many changes, and in 1982 it even received the name of Brezhnev. The original plan was to pave the square with shining metal octagonal plates, so that it would glitter in the sun, but evidently the money was not forthcoming, and so in the end they went on to build the colossus of the Central Committee, which blocks not only the panorama of the mountains but the sun as well.
