In the spring of 1885, a magnificent bronze sculpture of a resting boxer was found during excavations on the Quirinal Hill in Rome. The most interesting thing is that, unlike many finds from antiquity, this sculpture was originally hidden on purpose. Its excellent state of preservation is explained precisely by the fact that it was deliberately concealed from sight: a pit was dug for it and lined with gravel. Perhaps this was done during one of the sackings of Rome or during the persecutions of pagan cults. The second astonishing thing about the boxer is the inlays. His lips, face, wounds and hands were inlaid with copper to achieve the effect of blood.
