Possibly one of the greatest works of the furniture-maker's art: the pair of sofas with sea deities, made in 1765 by John Linnell, one of the first English cabinet-makers.

The sofas still occupy their place in the drawing room of Kedleston Hall in central England, in the county of Derbyshire, one of the principal monuments of neoclassicism in England.

The sumptuous gilded mermen and other mythical sea creatures were created on the basis of designs for the coronation coach of George III by Robert Adam, who reworked the plan of the entire house and became the chief designer of its interiors.
