Would you believe that this is the body of a 113-year-old elder who died 1677 years ago? These youthful-looking remains are the relics of one of the first Christian hermits, Saint Paul of Thebes, who lived in the 3rd and 4th centuries. The most interesting detail, to my mind, is the pink Byzantine caftan, oriental in fashion, with gold and pearl pendants, in which the relics were probably dressed only in Constantinople, where they ended up in the 12th century. Since the 13th century Paul has rested above the altar of the church of San Giuliano in Venice: a wealthy Venetian simply bought them and carried them home with him.
