Last night the Great Hall of the Conservatoire was sold out. The Nizhny Novgorod Opera and Ballet Theatre was marking its 90th anniversary, and did so on the country's foremost academic stage.

The programme: Mahler's Fourth Symphony and Leonid Desyatnikov's Opera in a new version written specially for the Nizhny Novgorodians. Its second performance before an audience. Dmitry Sinkovsky conducted; Nadezhda Pavlova, Yana Dyakova, Dilyara Idrisova and Sergey Godin sang; the La Voce Strumentale orchestra played. There were standing ovations, and as an encore came the recitative from Richard Strauss's “Ariadne auf Naxos”.

The audience was an interesting one. Among the habitual society figures and members of the artistic community I noticed, quite unexpectedly, Elvira Nabiullina, for one. Somewhere nearby were Vladimir Pozner, as well as the Bolshoi's prima ballerina and principal dancer, Eleonora Sevenard and Denis Rodkin. These are people who, in ordinary life, would seem rarely to find themselves in one space with the same intentions. For the sake of Mahler and the jubilee of one of Russia's most significant theatres, they nevertheless gathered together.

Last year the Nizhny Novgorod Opera gave eight concerts in Moscow. A schedule so dense looks less like a tour than like a presence in the cultural life of two cities. And not through any manifestos, but through good old-fashioned quality and repertoire choices. This is a cultural policy we approve of.
