# Queen Victoria, the Biedermeier style and her upbringing at Kensington Palace

Yesterday, at an interior-design lecture, a respected lady informed us with a perfectly straight face that Queen Victoria, being an ethnic German, invented the Biedermeier style upon arriving in England. Decorators and architects are of course under no obligation to be historians and to know such things, so I held my tongue, mindful of a friend of mine, an impresaria of the fashion world, who was convinced that Biedermeier was the surname of a craftsman. But I should like to make it clear that Queen Victoria was brought up in Kensington Palace, not in Germany, in rather peculiar conditions that came to be called the Kensington System, though on her mother's side she was indeed German 🙃
