Have you ever been expelled from university? I have. What stings most, by common consent, is when it happens over some useless, off-profile, run-of-the-mill subject. As in the case of our former student, a fellow traveller from 1844.

A man who had shown a sound knowledge of letters, history and music nevertheless failed to complete the university course and went into the civil service, because he did not want to stay on for a second year for the sake of a pass in Latin.

One wonders how many educated specialists, professionals, scholars and professors Russia went without in its day on account of that wretched Latin, which was taught any old how, learnt unwillingly and entirely forgotten within five years of leaving university?
