The vandals who tried to attach a propaganda photograph to Picasso's 1901 "Motherhood" and poured paint on the floor of the National Gallery have been found guilty of criminal damage. Sentence will be passed in the autumn. It is all, of course, very stupid and dreadful, but in essence they did not damage the painting: it was behind glass. If this "action" had not had an anti-Israel bent, what would they have got? They leaned a placard against the wall and doused the skirting board and floor with water-based emulsion; a couple of strokes of the birch would be quite enough.
