Have you ever heard the sound of cicadas? I am sure that, if you have, the rustle of a flock of birds is ringing in your ears even now, suddenly turning into a full, rolling cry that falls as though from above with a crackle, striking every surface with a ringing rebound and a creak. And so it goes on, not for a moment or an hour, but for a whole night. There is nothing to mistake for this sound on a dark summer evening.

The first episode of a new Russian series called «Tsikady» \[Cicadas\] has appeared on Kinopoisk, from the makers of the much-talked-about «Nulevoy patsient» \[Patient Zero\]: the director Yevgeny Stychkin and the showrunner Alexandra Remizova. So far I have not worked out why it has this title. But the interesting young cast already sounds piercing in the first episode, confidently holding its own against its older, slightly hoarser and more seasoned colleagues on screen, Pal, for instance, in the role of the class teacher.

In Russian cinema it is always a pleasure to see fresh faces, and in «Cicadas» there really are many, along with many lads and lasses already familiar from recent releases whose careers are interesting to follow, for example the beautiful Sonya Arzhanykh and the dashing Kirill Bukhantsev.

In the first episode the young cicadas chirped not very loudly, barely drowning out the voices of the adults and the sounds of the wider world, but at some point the story of the everyday life of “well-off children” in the upper forms takes on a gripping note: we learn that something terrible happened at a house party given by the new popular pupil.

Some may call the series a Russian answer to «13 Reasons Why» and «Euphoria». For now I can say only that this cheerless narrative, full of things left unsaid, promises a tangled and uneven continuation. We shall see.
