In the twentieth century the royal house of the Netherlands established a curious and honourable tradition: several generations of monarchs abdicated without waiting for the infirmities of old age, and handed the crown to the young. Queen Wilhelmina (1880-1962), the only daughter of Willem III to outlive him, reigned from 1890 to 1948 and, after abdicating, was styled Princess Wilhelmina. Her only daughter Juliana (1909-2004) was queen until 1980, passing power to the eldest of her 4 daughters, Beatrix. Beatrix renounced the throne in favour of her son after 33 years of rule, at the age of 75\. The 53-year-old King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander, has 3 daughters. In short, the House of Orange-Nassau is a handsome and wise dynasty
